Enjoy Bird Watching - Bird watching is thoroughly enjoyable experience in the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary given the number of species found here. Again, proper care and precaution need to be taken while undertaking a bird watching trip.

Birds - Peacock, Babblers, Cuckoos, Owl, Woodpecker and Jungle Fowl are few of the numerous birds that are seen flying in the park. It is a pleasure to watch as these birds go about their usual tasks collecting food for their young ones and themselves.

The colorful creatures always adds color to its surroundings. Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is no exception. The numerous species, 350 approximately, of birds adds a total new dimension to the environment of the forest. The twittering and chirping of these creatures forms the mysterious backdrop of the forest. In fact the ornithologists find Wayanad forest a great place for fact findings on birds.

Usually Peacock, babblers are the most common species which can be spotted around. In fact the reserve preserves a large peacock family. Adding more color and variety to its collection of the avian species are the cuckoos, owl, wood pecker and jungle fowl. Well, these are just a few among the huge count of 350 species.

In addition to all these some migratory birds migrate during favorable season, thus adding on to the ever growing number of the birds

Birding around Wayanad: With Wayanad having some thick evergreen vegetation and hills, you can see many birds of the western ghats in this region. Here a small incomplete list of birds for a birding trip to Wayanad: Asian Fairy Blue Bird, Scarlet Minivet, Emerald Dove, Yellow Browed Bulbul, Bar winged flycatcher shrike, Black lored tit, Chestnut tailed starlings, Forest Wagtail, Malabar Grey Hornbill, Plum headed parakeets, lorikeets, and many many more. Edakal caves and Tirunelli are great places for birding, where we saw many different species.

Pakshipathalam: Located deep within the forest in the Brahmagiri hills at an altitude of more than 1700mtrs, Pakshipathalam is a formation of large boulders, some as tall as two storey buildings! The deep caves found here are home to wide variety of birds, animals and distinctive species of plants. The journey involves an arduous 7km trek through thick forest commencing at Thirunelli.
