Where To Stay And Eat
The Inspection Bungalows are the only option within the sanctuary, but you may also stay in the bigger towns. For Tholpetty, stay at Mananthavady and for Muthanga, stay in Sulthan Bathery.

IN THE SANCTUARY
The Forest Wood House (Tel: 04935-250853; Tariff: Rs 400) at Tholpetty, and the Forest Wood House (Tel: 04936-270177; Tariff: Rs 400), a similar building, at Muthanga, are locally known as srambi, probably a corruption of the Malay word serambi, which means verandah or porch. And indeed, the two-storeyed, colonial srambi is nothing more than a building with one large room upstairs and one similar room downstairs, each with a spacious verandah. A wooden staircase provides access to the top floor. It is a convenient accommodation for the not-too-finicky. There is no electricity or running water, but one can make do with candles. Prior permission must be obtained from the Wildlife Warden, Sulthan Bathery Division to stay in these places. Remember too that these bungalows are meant to accommodate touring forest officials on duty. So if one of them happens to arrive unannounced, you will have to vacate the room, reservation or no reservation. The watchman cooks simple food for a small consideration. There are small, but  basic eateries near the checkpost.

The Forest Department also runs a dorm (50 beds, Rs 20-80) at Muthanga.  The caretaker can arrange food.
IN MANANTHAVADY
The Pachyderm Palace (Mobile: 09847044688; Tariff: Rs 2,000) is located opposite the entrance gate at Tholpetty, with five rooms and a multi-cuisine restaurant and arranges safaris and trekking. The Manasa Saras Elite Tourist Home (Tel: 04935-240236, 240408-09; Tariff: Rs 125-400) is an old establishment with 10 basic rooms, located half a kilometre from Mananthavady on the Thalassery Road. It has a restaurant, attached baths and TV.

IN SULTHAN BATHERY
The Orchid Resort (Tel: 04936-262844, Mobile: 09447160510; Tariff: Rs 1,350-3,850) is 12 km from Sulthan Bathery, off NH212 en route to Muthanga. It’s an eco-friendly resort with eight rooms, four huts, a tree house, a restaurant and a swimming pool. It also offers trekking and jeep safaris.

The Edakkal Hermitage (Tel: 04936-221860/ 178, Mobile: 09447204654; Tariff: Rs 3,300-3,800), located near the Edakkal Caves, offers seven rooms, a tree house, tent, restaurant and sightseeing. The Resorts (Tel: 220510-12; Tariff: Rs 350-900) has rooms with TV, a restaurant and a bar and also organises trekking and car rentals.
Food options include Hotel Prince, a multi-cuisine restaurant in the Dwarka Tourist Home (Tel: 220358; Tariff: Rs 225-775), Jubilee Restaurant, and Hotel Jaya (Tel: 220245; Tariff: Rs 70-140).
